Short-term Volunteer Application: Ishinomaki, Miyagi prefecture
Following the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami of 11 March 2011, the Peace Boat Disaster Relief Volunteer Center (PBV) has been coordinating relief activities within Miyagi Prefecture, focusing on Ishinomaki City and Onagawa Town.
As a result of joint effort between PBV volunteers and the local people of Ishinomaki and Onagawa, the ‘Peace Boat Center Ishinomaki’ was opened in the central district of Ishinomaki in June this year (2012), with the aim of creating a ‘social community space’ to support Ishinomaki’s recovery.
As time passes since the Earthquake and Tsunami disaster, the nature and needs of recovery support are constantly changing. Even now there is still plenty to be done.
To encourage people to come to Ishinomaki and join in volunteering activities, the PBV team provide both accommodation and equipment necessary to participate. Anyone is welcome to apply to volunteer, including those who are volunteering for the first time, as well as groups or solo volunteers. The PBV team in Ishinomaki are looking forward to working with you.
As many of the PBV activities involve interaction within the local Ishinomaki community (see below for details), those with Japanese language ability or teams with at least one member who can communicate in Japanese are particularly encouraged to participate.
