Peace Boat has started collecting donations for the purpose of providing emergency relief to people suffering in earthquake affected areas of Turkey.

02-s Newspaper delivery to temporary housing

October 26, 2011

Peace Boat is now creating a weekly newspaper to be delivered to temporary housing throughout Ishinomaki as part of its relief activities.

03-s 7 months on – the closure of the Ishinomaki evacuation centres

As of October 11, all evacuation centres of Ishinomaki have been closed. Peace Boat plans to continue supporting the local community such as through provision of newspapers to temporary housing.

Taylor Anderson was an assistant English teacher from the US who lost her life in the tsunami. 4 members of her family volunteered with Peace Boat in her beloved Ishinomaki on September 8.

On September 9 approximately 30 volunteers participated in the Festival at Hayamahime Temple Festival Temple, which is located in the Oginohama area of the Oshika Peninsula.

Over the past two weeks the number of visitors to the public baths, “Kizuna no yu” and “Fudou no yu” that were opened to the public on August 22 exceeded 3500 people!

Slate stones are a traditional industry of Ogatsu town, near Ishinomaki. Volunteers have been working to collect them to be reused for things such as roof tiles, accessories and ink stones.

Peace Boat has completed cleaning of over 1,200 locations in Ishinomaki, including homes, shops, schools, drains and cemeteries. These photos show scenes before and after volunteer efforts.

At 2:46pm on September 11, six months since the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, all volunteers and staff together held a moment of silence to pray for the souls of those who lost their lives.

Peace Boat first met Mr Nakazato on July 2 at the Ogatsu Recovery Market. He is a fisherman in Funakoshi, a small village of 320 people before the disaster where the tsunami destroyed most homes.

Recently volunteers have become busy with cleaning graves and the surrounding areas, as local residents have requested help to have the graves cleaned by the time of the coming equinox.

The "Dani-buster" team been working since June, and is in charge of cleaning bedding, pest control and in particular removing bed bugs in the more than 60 evacuation centers in Ishinomaki area.

On July 26, “Corrida por Japon” or “Let's run for Japan” was held by the Japan Chamber of Commerce in Paraguay. Funds collected by the 1000 participants were donated to Peace Boat for disaster relief.

4-s Two public baths open in Ishinomaki! “Kizuna no yu” and “Fudou no yu”

Two new public baths were opened on August 22. Constructed by the Ishinomaki Disaster Recovery Assistance Council, Peace Boat is now in charge of operating the baths.

Flies and mosquitoes are increasing in the disaster affected areas, and Peace Boat is now working to install fly screens in evacuation centres throughout the Ishinomaki region.

On August 7, the closing ceremony of the Dougenin Temple evacuation center was held. Established soon after the earthquake and tsunami, this centre has helped to protect the residents of Ishinomaki.

08 Ishinomaki Photo Exhibition Travels the World

An exhibition of photographs from areas affected by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake & Tsunami was conducted in 19 ports around the world during Peace Boat’s 73rd Global Peace Voyage.
